Plant and animal science is breaking new ground driven by convergence of technologies across biology, chemistry, nutrition, remote sensing and natural resource management. Increased collaboration between researchers, farmers, manufacturers, marketers and policy makers is critical to the innovation pathway and to accelerating adoption of improved methods and technology. New research models may include greater emphasis on interactive development and trial of solutions on farms and in multifunction precincts.

Australia has a number of globally connected research organisations working in the agriculture field including CSIRO, the Rural Reseach and Development Corporations, which focus on the needs of specific agricultural sub-sectors, and the leading universities, each of which have research units specialising in various aspects of agricultural research as well as cross disciplinary teams, working on such things as application of robotics, sensor technology and biomedical research.
