Whisper on the wind: Eco Whisper Turbine

This novel Australian wind turbine design employs an outer cowling to reduce noise and increase efficiency. Its design is suitable for smaller farm-scale applications.

This Aussie-made wind turbine is smaller, quieter and safer than traditional three-pronged turbines.

After two years’ development and testing, Brisbane-based Renewable Energy Solutions Australia (RESA), designer-manufacturer of Eco Whisper Turbines, has successfully completed a commercial installation of its wind turbine in Tullamarine, Victoria.

Since its launch in October 2011, the whisper-quiet wind turbine has garnered substantial interest. A finalist in the 2011 Australian Cleantech Awards, it picked up the 2012 Queensland Premier's Sustainability Award for Innovation in Technology and was the recipient of a $250,000 commercialisation grant from the Australian Government.

The horizontal-axis wind turbine (HAWT), more compact than its competitors, has a unique 30-blade, cowled design that greatly reduces noise and makes it up to 30 percent more efficient than traditional three-bladed designs, even in low-wind conditions.

It can be used in winds of up to 180 kilometres an hour and a hinged pole allows it to be lowered for safety in extreme weather (and simplifies maintenance between times).

The turbine comes in two models: the 21.1 metre-high Eco Whisper Turbine 650 (now selling), which generates up to 20kW and is suitable for rural/dairies/large farms/commercial/industrial applications; and a smaller 325 model (in development) that generates up to 5kW.

In a year, the turbines can generate up to 45,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) and 11,250kWh of power respectively at peak capacity – though actual output varies depending on the speed and frequency of wind at the turbine site.

The Eco Whisper wind turbine is suitable for small-scale, off-grid farms with sufficient wind.

With a footprint much smaller than those of comparable solar installations, the Eco Whisper can be deployed in various settings: residential, commercial, industrial, mining, manufacturing and agricultural.

Australian designed and manufactured, with an Aussie-made inverter and generator, the turbine has a lifespan of 20+ years, is competitively priced, and is a clean, fuel-free electricity-generation option for those in locations with favourable wind conditions. Deployed on or off the grid, it’s especially well-suited to remote locations as a replacement for trucked-in diesel fuel.

“This installation is another significant step towards proving that wind power is a safe and cost-effective clean energy alternative, says RESA CEO Tony Le Messurier.  “[It] paves the way for future installations, not just in Victoria but around the world.”
